Privacy Policy — Simplify
Last updated: 23 September 2026
Simplify is a Chrome extension that rewrites the text of a web page into simpler
language at a reading level you choose. It has no analytics of any kind. This
policy describes every piece of data the extension touches.
Simplify works in two modes, and they differ in exactly one respect: where the
page text goes. Read the mode you use.
- Bring your own key. You supply an Anthropic or OpenAI key. There is no
account and no server; nothing the developer operates sees your page text.
This is unchanged from earlier versions.
- Subscription. You pay €2.99 a month instead of holding a key. Your page
text passes through a server the developer operates, on its way to the model
provider.

What is stored on your device
The extension stores the following in chrome.storage.local, which lives only in
your own Chrome profile on your own computer:
- Your API key or keys, one per provider, and — if you subscribe — your
subscription key.
- Your chosen reading level (A1, A2, B1 or B2).
- Your chosen provider and model.
- An install id: a random identifier generated on first use, so a subscription
key can be limited to a few devices. It is random, not derived from your
hardware, and identifies a browser profile rather than a person.
Your API keys are never transmitted to the developer. Uninstalling the extension
deletes everything in this list.
What leaves your device, and when
Nothing leaves your device until you click Simplify this page.
Bring your own key
- The visible paragraph text of the page in that tab is sent, in batches, to the
API provider you selected — either Anthropic (
api.anthropic.com) or OpenAI
(api.openai.com).
- Your API key for that provider is sent to that same provider, as the
authentication header the API requires.
The text and the key go directly from your browser to that provider. They do not
pass through any server operated by the developer.
Your API key is never sent to the developer, to any analytics service, or to any
party other than the provider you chose.
Subscription
- The visible paragraph text of the page in that tab is sent, in batches, to a
server operated by the developer, which forwards it to OpenAI and returns the
simplified result.
- That text is not stored. It is held in memory for the length of the
request and discarded. It is not written to a database, not written to logs,
and not used to train anything.
- Your subscription key, your install id, and a random identifier for the page
being simplified are sent with each batch. That identifier is a random number
generated fresh for each page; it is not the page address, and the server is
never told which page or site you are reading.
- The server keeps, per subscription: how many pages you simplified this month,
how many tokens that used, and which install ids have been activated. These
are counts, not content.
In both modes, once you have your result, how the provider handles the text is
governed by their policy, not this one:
- Anthropic: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy
- OpenAI: https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy
Payment data, if you subscribe
Payments are processed by Stripe. Card details are entered on Stripe’s own
checkout page and go to Stripe, never to the developer, who never sees or stores
a card number.
The developer stores your email address, your Stripe customer and subscription
identifiers, your subscription status and its renewal date, and a one-way hash
of your subscription key. The key itself is not stored and cannot be read back
out of the database.
Stripe’s handling of your payment data is governed by their policy:
https://stripe.com/privacy.
Cancelling is done from the billing portal, reachable from the extension popup.
On cancellation your subscription is deactivated; the records above are retained
only as long as tax and accounting law requires.
What is never collected
- No browsing history, and no record of which pages you simplify. In
subscription mode the server counts pages; it is never told their addresses.
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or usage statistics.
- No location data, and no device or hardware identifiers.
- No contact details at all in bring-your-own-key mode; in subscription mode,
only the email address attached to your payment.
- No advertising, and no sale or transfer of data to third parties.
Permissions and why each exists
storage — saves your key, level, provider and model on your device.
activeTab and scripting — lets the extension read and rewrite the text of
the single tab you invoke it on, at the moment you click the button. The
extension does not run on pages you have not explicitly asked it to act on.
- Host access to
api.anthropic.com, api.openai.com and the Simplify
subscription server — the API endpoints. These are the only network
destinations the extension can reach. The subscription server is contacted
only when you are using subscription mode.
